Free things to do around Princeton and Farmersville

Not every weekend needs a budget. This part of Collin County has a surprising amount going on that costs nothing but the gas to get there — and most of it is better than the paid alternatives an hour west in the metroplex.

The Chaparral Trail, Farmersville

The best free thing out here, and it isn't close. The trailhead sits at the restored Onion Shed in downtown Farmersville — a 1930s loading dock from the town's onion-shipping days — with parking, a covered pavilion, picnic tables, and restrooms.

The city maintains about five miles: roughly half paved, half crushed granite. Keep going and you're on the Northeast Texas Trail, an old rail corridor that runs well over a hundred miles east toward Paris and beyond.

• Good for: walking, running, biking, and horseback riding on the unpaved sections
• Dog-friendly on leash
• Bring water — the trail is short on fountains once you're out of town
• There are geocaches scattered along it if you want a reason to stop

Princeton Municipal Park

Newer, close by, and genuinely nice. Roughly a mile of accessible hike-and-bike trail loops two ponds, crossing several pedestrian bridges that light up at dusk. Picnic areas, restrooms, plenty of parking.

It's the low-effort option — twenty minutes of walking after dinner rather than a whole outing. Princeton has several miles of connected trail beyond this one if you want to string a longer walk together.

The cheapest weekends out here are usually the ones you remember.

Sister Grove Park

Over on the Lavon Lake side, with singletrack trails that mountain bikers and trail runners both use. A few loops of varying difficulty, more elevation change than you'd expect from this part of Texas, and rarely crowded.

Downtown Farmersville and the square

Worth an hour on its own. Restored storefronts, the Onion Shed, the Audie Murphy monument, and the town's heritage museum. On the first Saturday of most months the Onion Shed hosts a combined farmers and flea market — free to browse, and the best people-watching in the county.

Lavon Lake shoreline

Several access points around the lake for fishing from the bank, watching the boats, or just eating a sandwich somewhere with a view. Worth noting that some of the developed parks and boat ramps do charge a day-use fee, while other shoreline access is free — check before you pull in.

The stuff that costs nothing at all

• County road drives. Genuinely one of the better things about living out here. Late afternoon, windows down, no destination.
• The public library. Books, air conditioning in August, free Wi-Fi that's often better than your hotspot, and a quiet table.
• Small-town events. Christmas on the square, summer concerts, Fourth of July fireworks — most of it free and most of it announced on city Facebook pages rather than anywhere findable.
• Stargazing. Twenty minutes east of here the sky opens up in a way it doesn't anywhere closer to Dallas.
• Sunset from your own site. Undersold, and free every single night.

City websites and city Facebook pages are where local events actually get posted — not event aggregators, which miss almost everything out here. Follow Princeton and Farmersville's pages and you'll hear about things a week ahead instead of the day after.
